mangroves

Mangroves are diverse coastal wet forests providing so many essential ecosystem services - they store massive amounts of carbon, provide nurseries for fish and marine species, and protect coastal against storms and sea level rise. They are adaptable, dynamic ecosystems which require tailored monitoring systems to detect changes in space and time.

We specialize in mangrove ecosystems, deriving information from satellites, drones and mobile technology to assess coastal forests and wetlands in time and space, including carbon storage, dynamic changes, stand age, relative canopy height, and degradation.

Mapping mangrove extent for sustainable development goal (SDG) reporting

We have developed completely automated and validated methods for mapping mangroves, using powerful cloud computing and machine learning algorithms. We provide national scale mangrove maps over time periods of up to three decades.

In the image on the left, stable mangroves are shown in green, gains in light green, losses in red. There is extensive mangrove loss in the northern area, with new mangrove accretion in the channel islands.

Drone-based mangrove surveys

Combining visual and near-infrared cameras mounted on drones we can develop three-dimensional views of forest structure as well as vegetation indices to assess forest health, degradation.

Mangrove extent and condition in Madagascar

we used cloud computing and three decades of satellite imagery to assess status and trends of mangrove ecosystems in Madagascar. These maps are validated, with over 90% accuracy. Explore the interactive map below. read the report in French and English.
